Chapter 15: Ten Trucks

I left the truck on the road and walked down.

Ten pickups were parked along the fence, and every one of them had a rancher beside it.

I knew most of the faces from weaning day.

The gray-haired man in the feed cap stood at the front, and beside him the woman with silver braids.

"Morning," she said. "Heard you went to see Holcomb."

"I did."

"How'd it go?"

"He called my knees a liability."

A low sound went along the line.

Jace had crossed the grass to me.

"I called them at six," he said. "I didn't ask. I told them."

"You asked for help."

"I did." His jaw worked. "It was awful. I'd do it again."

I laughed and took his hand.

The feed-cap rancher cleared his throat.

"Ms. Haddad. The gate sits on Holcomb's easement, but the water's ours. Every ranch on this creek holds a right from the 1911 decree. Mine, hers, his, the Grange's."

"Yours?"

"All of ours. He closed a gate on eleven families, and he did it on a Saturday so nobody could say anything."

"So what do we do?"

"We open it," said the woman with the braids. "Together. In daylight. All of us."

"Isn't that trespass?"

"If one man does it," the rancher said. "If eleven families do it, the sheriff has a real hard day."

The gate was a rusted wheel on a concrete box.
