Chapter 23: The Night Before
The long pine table held thirty-one people and one empty chair.
It was Friday night, the night before the wedding, and every neighbor on the creek was in Lottie's kitchen.
Nobody had planned a rehearsal dinner.
They had simply arrived with covered dishes, one at a time, until there was no more table.
The feed-cap rancher had brought a ham.
The woman with the braids had brought pie.
My mother stood at the stove directing four ranchers' wives in the art of rolled grape leaves, and none of them dared argue.
At the head of the table, between Chet and the window, sat Lottie's chair.
Nobody had put a plate in front of it.
Nobody sat in it.
I'd noticed everybody avoiding the corner of my eye when they passed it.
"Leave her a plate," Jace said under his breath.
"Are you sure?"
"She'd hate to miss a meal."
I set a plate.
Somebody poured a glass of the good whiskey beside it.
