Chapter 16: The Parley
The ground between the armies was flat, brown and empty, and the wind blew across it hard.
Six of the Company's best stood fifty paces behind her.
Do-gyeom walked at her left shoulder with one hand on his sword hilt, as he had promised.
Ha-rin wore the full gold robe, the crown pin, and her cropped hair combed flat.
She walked slowly, and the hem whispered over the stubble.
Across the ground, the Crown's camp watched in silence.
Six thousand men stood in rows on the slope, and she felt every one of their eyes.
A gold canopy had been set up in the middle of the field, with a carpet under it and three folding chairs.
In the center chair sat Yi Jun-seok.
He was exactly as she remembered.
Slim and pale, neat in white silk, a gold cap on his topknot, a long handsome face composed in the expression he used for petitioners.
Three old men in armor stood behind him, with their helmets under their arms.
His generals.
The distance from them to the canopy was far too great, and her stomach dropped.
He had placed them well back, by the horses.
