Chapter 9: The Moon Spring
Somebody at the Ironclaw table snickered.
Then another one.
"Runt," a warrior said, not even quietly.
I knew his voice. Jace. I had sewn up his arm once after a hunt.
He was laughing now with the rest of them.
It was the training ring all over again.
My small black wolf. The whole pack pointing.
Dominic, at the rail, laughing loudest.
He wasn't laughing now.
He was looking at Celia's stomach.
Rhett stepped up beside me.
He didn't say a word to the Ironclaw table.
He just looked at Jace until Jace stopped.
Then he put his hand on the small of my back.
"We're done here," he said.
We walked back across the lawn.
Nobody clapped for that.
I made it all the way to his truck before my legs gave out.
I sat down on the running board and put my head between my knees.
Rhett crouched in front of me.
He didn't tell me it was going to be all right.
He didn't tell me anything.
He waited.
"She's right," I said into my knees. "Saturday I'll stand there and Sable won't say a word. And I'll get in his car and go north."
"You won't."
