Chapter 13: Until Dawn

We were to ride at dawn, and he came to me after midnight.

I was sitting on the floor of his chamber with my back against the bed, turning Nessa's words over until they wore smooth.

You wished for him.

I had no memory of it, and I could not make myself believe I had.

The door opened and closed, and Rorik stood there with his sword belt in one hand.

"You're not asleep," he said.

"You said you'd be back before the lamp burned down."

"The lamp is still burning."

"Barely."

He hung the belt on the peg and crouched in front of me, close enough that I could smell rain and horse on him.

"Nessa took your face in her hands today," he said. "What did she tell you?"

I looked at him.

The honest answer was the whole of it.

The honest answer was also a thing I did not understand, and I could not hand him a wish I could not remember making.

"That the Stone is an old place," I said. "That Harlan will be there. That I should be quick."

"Quick at what?"

"Whatever I'm meant to do."

His grey eyes held mine for a long moment, and I knew he had heard the gap in it.

He did not ask again.

"Keep it, then," he said quietly. "Until you want to give it to me."

My throat went tight.

I took his collar in both hands and pulled him down to me.

The kiss was slow, and I felt him decide it would be.

His hand cradled the back of my head, and his thumb ran along the line behind my ear.

"Tonight I'm not in a hurry," he said against my mouth.

"We ride at dawn."

"Then we have until dawn."

He lifted me onto the bed and knelt over me, and for a moment he only looked.

"Tell me what you're looking at," I said.

"The place where I first saw you whole."

"The field?"

"My dream. Before the first blade." He touched my cheek with the backs of his fingers. "You were laughing at something in a doorway. You had no white in your hair."
