Chapter 20: Swear It

Rorik's POV

Harlan Crowe did not answer me from the Stone.

I let the silence run.

Three hundred Moonflare warriors stood on the west road with their swords half lowered, and every one of them was watching their Beta.

Sabine's hand was in mine, warm and steady and entirely alive.

I kept hold of it.

"You said a lie spoken at this Stone is a lie spoken before the Goddess," I said to the ridge. "Nessa taught the law. Nessa, was she right?"

"I was," Nessa said from the grass.

"Then swear, Harlan."

He wet his lips.

"I won't be tried by the man who nearly took her head."

"You asked me to take her head an hour ago."

A low sound moved through the Moonflare ranks.

Harlan heard it too.

He took his hand off the rock and wiped it down his coat, slowly, in the quiet, and then he laid his right palm flat on the broken stone.

"I swear," he said, "before the Goddess and both packs, that I did not poison the river of Ironclad."

The light along the crack flared white.

Harlan screamed.

He snatched his hand back and held it against his chest.

The skin of his palm was blistered black in the shape of five fingers, and the smell of burning rose between us.

Nobody moved.

I looked at the Moonflare warriors and said it plainly.

"Your Beta just lied to the Goddess."

"It's a trick," Harlan gasped. "The witch's work. The Stone's cursed."

"Swear again."

"I won't."

"Then I'll say what you did, and you can stop me where I'm wrong." I let go of Sabine's hand and took one step toward him. "You took a vial from the Luna's chambers. You carried it to my river in the spring."
