Chapter 7: Sunday Supper
Gran Lu answered the door of her apartment over the bakery with a wooden spoon in her fist.
She was five foot two and seventy-two years old.
She looked up at Griffin Stroud for a long, silent moment.
"You'll have to duck for the beam," she said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Sit there.
"No, there.
"That chair's the strong one."
He sat in the strong one.
It creaked, and she approved of the sound.
Sunday supper at Gran's was pot roast, mashed potatoes, green beans cooked to death, and a pie.
Griffin ate everything.
He ate three plates and complimented every one, and my grandmother's blue eyes got narrower and narrower over her reading glasses.
"So you're the boy who bought himself," she said.
I choked on my water.
"Gran."
"I'm asking."
"Yes, ma'am," Griffin said.
"Nine thousand dollars is a lot to pay for a woman you didn't know."
"I didn't buy her.
"I gave her the win."
"Hm."
She put down her fork.
"What do you want with my granddaughter, Mr. Stroud?"
He did not look at me.
He looked straight at her, steady, and answered in that dry plain voice.
"Anything she'll give me, ma'am."
"That's a good answer."
"It's the true one."
"It's still the wrong one," Gran said.
