Chapter 13: Patience
The iron came down, and I did not move.
I could not have moved if I'd tried.
Then the blade stopped a hand's width above my head.
It shook in the air, and the sound it made was a scream of metal.
Alekos was standing over me with both fists locked on the hilt.
Every tendon in his arms stood out.
White smoke poured off the black ring on his wrist, and it smelled like burning hair.
"I can't hold it," he said through his teeth.
"The water wants it down."
"Then don't hold it," I said.
"Hold it a second longer."
I don't know where the words came from.
I reached up with my right hand and closed it around the blade.
It was cold and sharp, and it bit straight through my palm.
Blood ran down my wrist, red and ordinary.
The scar on my hand woke up.
Light ran up the iron, forked and white, and the sword stopped screaming.
It hung there between the two of us, humming.
