Chapter 21: Walt
The ferryman planted his pole in the sand, and the air went cold as a river at night.
Water ran up out of the ground around his feet.
It rose in a column, grey and fine as mist, and a man stood in it.
He had a plaid flannel shirt and reading glasses pushed up on his forehead.
He was sixty-one years old, and he looked a lot better than he had in April.
I could not feel my legs.
"Walt Weatherly," Hera said.
"By the river's leave, you may speak once, before the Assembly."
The shade blinked slowly, the way he used to when he woke up in his chair.
Then he found me in the crowd, and his whole face changed.
"Hey, kiddo," he said.
My mother made a small sound beside me.
Her hand clamped on mine.
He turned his head, and he saw her.
He didn't move.
He just looked at her with his glasses on his forehead, and eighteen years went across his face.
"June," he said.
"Hi, Walt."
"You cut your hair."
