Chapter 23: Free

The bolt hit him in the chest, and the whole Stadion went white.

When the light cleared he was lying on his back in the sand with smoke rising off his tunic.

I got to him first.

I don't remember crossing the ground.

I was on my knees with both hands on his face, and his beard was singed and his eyes were closed.

"Alekos."

"No," he said.

"Don't."

"Alekos!"

His chest moved.

Gold ran from the corner of his mouth, and it was warm on my wrist.

He opened one amber eye and looked at me.

"I've been struck by worse," he said.

"You have not."

"No," he admitted.

"This is the worst."

I laughed, and it came out as a sob.

Under my hand, his heart was beating, stubborn and slow.

The ageless years had held.

I wanted to hit him.

I kissed him instead, on the singed mouth, in front of ten thousand gods.

A long, shaky exhale went through the arena.

"Enough," said Zeus.

He had come down from the box again.
