Chapter 21: Her Sister's Heart

I don't remember crossing the ring.

I remember Ash's arm falling away, and the blanket sliding off my shoulders, and the frozen grass under my knees.

Felicity lay on her back with her lips gone blue.

Her eyes were half open and looking at nothing.

The nurse had two fingers at her throat.

"I can't find a pulse," she said. "I can't find it."

"Move."

I put the heel of my hand on the center of my sister's chest, and I put the other hand on top.

I had seen it done on a poster in the feed store break room.

I pushed down hard.

Something cracked under my palms, and I kept going.

"One, two, three, four."

My arms were already shaking from the poison.

My whole right side burned where Rowan's claws had gone through.

"Breathe for her," I said to the nurse. "Now."

She bent and breathed into Felicity's mouth, and I pressed again.

Four hundred people stood around us without making one sound.

"Come on," I said. "Felicity. Come on, you stubborn thing."

My vision was going gray at the edges.

I pushed down and counted, and lost the count, and started over.

Somewhere behind me, a woman was running.

"Out of the way! Move!"

The Garrick pack healer dropped to her knees in the grass with a red case under her arm.

"The hall's machine," she said. "Harold bought it for her years ago, and nobody ever touched it."

She tore Felicity's coat open and slapped two pads to her chest.

"Hands off her, Sigrid."

I sat back on my heels, and I put my hands on my own knees to stop them shaking.
