Chapter 15: Her Own Award
The Heritage Prize dinner was held in the same hotel ballroom where I had given away my ring.
I walked in on Joaquin's arm at nine, in a red dress.
It was the first color I had worn to an Ashbury event in five years.
Four hundred people in black tie turned in their chairs, and the noise in the room dropped by half.
Conrad stood at the head table in his tuxedo, with the glass prize statue in front of his plate.
He was the honoree this year, for forty years of Ashbury Cellars.
His mother sat at his right in navy and pearls, perfectly composed.
Courtney sat at the staff table by the kitchen doors, in green, with her hands in her lap.
At the back, beside the service door, Wyatt stood with the sommeliers in a dark suit.
He was pouring the Ashbury Cabernet for the room, and I did not let myself look at him twice.
The chair of the Vintners went up to the podium and tapped the microphone.
"Before we honor Conrad Ashbury," she said, "the board has asked one guest to speak. Ms. Quintero owns the land this winery stands on, and we have heard some serious things about it this week."
Conrad's chair scraped back.
"This is a private dinner."
"It's a Vintners dinner," the chair said. "Sit down, Mr. Ashbury."
He sat.
I walked up through the tables and took the microphone, and my hands were not shaking.
"I'll be quick," I said. "I came to present an award of my own."
The screen behind me lit up with the Ashbury crest.
