Chapter 7: Not Occupying, Collecting
At seven on Tuesday morning there was a news van at the gate.
I saw it from the east guest room window, with the second white bottle in my fist and a cup of cold coffee at my elbow.
My phone had been buzzing since five.
Joaquin had sent me a link without a message.
It was a video of me on the terrace, in the red jersey, holding a sheet of paper in the air.
Somebody had posted the whole scene from the wine club table, and a million people had watched it before breakfast.
Under it, the title read: Napa Wife Reads Husband's Commitment Order Aloud. Date Is Three Weeks Old.
The second link was a different video.
Courtney had posted a clip of the same morning, cut down to ten seconds.
It showed me in the jersey, staring at the doctor with my mouth open, with the caption: We are so worried about our Marisol.
Under it, Conrad had put out a statement.
The Ashbury family is deeply concerned for Marisol's wellbeing during this difficult time.
I put the phone down.
Lillian was already in the kitchen, stirring oatmeal on the big stove.
"Good morning, dear. Did you sleep?"
I set the white bottle on the counter between us.
"I found this on my pillow."
She stopped stirring.
Her eyes went to the bottle, and her face went through something quick and complicated before it settled on distress.
"Oh. Oh, that's the old stock." She put a hand to her chest. "I told the housekeeper to throw those out. She must have turned the bed down and put them back. I'm so sorry."
"There's a card in your handwriting."
"I wrote it Saturday, before I knew." She touched my sleeve. "Give it to me, I'll flush the whole lot."
