Chapter 4: The Report That Read Both Babies Dead

The door opened a hand's width, and a big shoulder in a navy uniform shirt filled the gap.

Ansel was out of his chair before it finished swinging.

"Captain," he said.

"Killian." Dalton's voice was raw. "You were on Cedar Street."

"I was."

"You took two women off the fourth floor."

"I did."

"Where did they go?"

Ansel put his hand flat on the door and held it where it was.

"Not in this hallway," he said. "There's a family room at the end. Somebody from the hospital is bringing paperwork."

"Don't give me paperwork. Where's my wife?"

I stood behind the door with my back against the wall.

I couldn't have gone anywhere if I'd wanted to.

My hand was over my mouth, and the IV line pulled on my arm.

Ansel did not look back at me.

"Sir," he said. "The paper is better than me."

Dalton's boots went down the hall.

The officer got up from the computer, smoothed her skirt, and took a single printed page out of the tray.

She looked at me for one second.

"Stay here," she said. "If you want to see it, there's a gap in the wall by the supply closet. Don't come out."

Then she was gone, with the page in her hand.

I waited until Ansel stepped into the hall after her.

I took the IV pole and went the long way, past the linen cart, and stood at the narrow gap beside the supply closet where I could see into the family room.

It was a small room with a gray couch and a box of tissues.

Dalton stood in the center of it with his arms hanging.

Corey was against the wall with both fists shut.

Imogen had taken the couch, with a tissue already in her hand.
