Chapter 11: The Guest Lodge

Teagan's POV

He came to the gate before dawn, on foot, with his coat buttoned wrong.

I had been awake for an hour, sitting on the porch step in my aunt's quilt.

He didn't stop at the bar this time. He stopped a full pace short of it, and he held out a folded sheet of paper with both hands.

"Read this," he said. "Then tell me I'm not insane."

It was a page torn from a small green book.

Tamarack Memorial to the guest lodge. 3:10 a.m. Cargo: two.

I held it so still the paper didn't rustle.

"I took it from my father's study," Conall said. "There's more. Vera's scans have another woman's name on them. She's never been to the clinic she says she uses. She told me I could be the man who killed his brother's pup, too."

"She said that?"

"In those words."

"What did you say?"

"I said nothing. She smiled and went to bed." His mouth twisted. "I think she believes I'll do what I always do."

"Which is?"

"Look after her."

Roz had come out onto the porch behind me.

She took the page out of my hand and read it, and her breath went in sharp.

"Two," she said. "Two, Teagan."

"I know."

"Cargo. They wrote it down. They wrote our daughters down like a delivery."

"Where's the guest lodge?" I asked.

"Across the lake," said Conall. "A mile and a half. My father keeps six wolves on it, day and night."
