Chapter 9: The Terms Thrown Back

In the morning, I walked down to the gate on my own legs.

Roz said I shouldn't. I told her it was my gate.

Conall sat on the tailgate of his truck on the road side of the bar, with his boots in the gravel and a paper cup of coffee going cold beside him.

He stood up when he saw me.

"You shouldn't be on your feet."

"You crossed the line last night."

"I know."

"You said my name."

"I know that too."

"I said the road side of the gate, only the pups, and never my name. You broke the first two in one night, and the third when you talked about my vitals."

He had the grace to look at the ground.

"I didn't mean to," he said.

"You whispered my name for ten minutes."

I watched that land.

"I could hear every word," I said. "Do you know what else I could hear? I could hear you on the phone on the road. I could hear you say stop using our pup."

"Teagan."

"That's what you said. Our pup was dying, and you said stop using her."

"I know."

"Stop saying you know!"

It came out of me louder than I meant, and it echoed off the water.

A bird went up from the reeds.

He didn't flinch, and he didn't answer. He only stood there.

"I want you to say it back to me," I said. "Say what you said. Say it to my face."

His mouth worked.

"Stop using our pup to keep me away from her," he said, in a rough voice. "That's what I said."
