Chapter 16: Her Orders
Kaede sat on the edge of the farmhouse bed with her knees apart and her hands resting on them.
She had pulled on her armor again, the black lacquer over bare skin, tied at the throat with the red cord.
She looked like a general in a painting.
Rin stood in the middle of the floor in her grey robe, and her mouth had gone dry.
"You're wearing it," Rin said.
"I thought you might like it."
"I do."
"Good. Stand still."
The voice was Kaede's field voice, low and level and used to being obeyed by three thousand people.
Rin had heard it across a camp a hundred times.
She had never heard it aimed at her.
Her knees went weak.
"Hands behind your back," Kaede said. "Clasp them. Don't let go until I say."
Rin hesitated.
She hated being handled.
She had hated it all her life.
She hated the hands on her shoulder and the guiding elbow, every person who thought they knew where she should go.
She put her hands behind her back and clasped them.
Something in her chest loosened.
"Good," Kaede said softly. "Look at me."
Rin looked.
Kaede did not smile.
She looked her over, slowly, from the braid to the bare feet and back up.
"The robe," Kaede said. "I'm going to untie it. You're not going to help."
She stood and walked around her, with her boots loud on the boards.
Rin felt her stop behind her, felt the heat of her at her back.
Fingers found the knot of the sash and worked it free, slow, taking forever.
The robe parted.
Kaede's hands slid in under it, over her ribs, up to cup her breasts from behind.
Rin gasped.
"Eyes front."
"Yes."
"Yes, what?"
Rin swallowed.
"Yes, General."
The thumbs flicked over her nipples, and Rin's whole body bowed toward the touch.
Her clasped hands pulled against each other.
"You like that," Kaede murmured in her ear. "You like being told."
"I... yes."
"Tell me."
"I like it. I like when you use that voice. I can't think. It's... it's so quiet in my head."
"Good."
Kaede pushed the robe off her shoulders, and it fell to the floor.
She walked around to the front again and looked at all of her.
Rin stood bare in the lamplight, soft and round and flushed from the throat down, with her hands clasped behind her.
She wanted to cover herself, out of habit.
She stood straighter instead.
"Look at you,"
Kaede said. Her voice had cracked a little.
