Chapter 17: The Rematch
"I want my rematch," Si-hyeon said.
He said it in front of three hundred members of the cult, in the training yard, at dusk, with a wooden stave in his hand and the smell of blood still in his nose.
Gwi-han looked at him across the sand as though he had proposed marriage.
"Tonight?"
"Tonight."
"You're exhausted."
"So are you."
"The Alliance will be at the ford at noon."
"Which is why I need to know."
Si-hyeon turned the stave over in his hand.
"I need to know it was me and not luck," he said. "Whatever you did to keep me close, I want to know what I can do with a blade."
Gwi-han said nothing for a long moment.
Then he threw his black sword aside, so that it stuck upright in the sand, and took a plain practice stave from the rack.
"Don't hold back," Gwi-han said.
"You said that before. Then you stopped on the eighth beat."
"I won't stop tonight."
"Good."
The yard went silent.
Si-hyeon raised the stave and fell into the first guard of the Cloud Parting Form.
Gwi-han didn't take a stance at all.
He stood there, enormous, with his stave loose in one hand, and looked at Si-hyeon.
Then he moved.
The first strike came so fast that Si-hyeon saw it only as a ripple.
He got his stave up on instinct, and it hit with a crack that shuddered up to his shoulder.
The force drove him back two steps through the sand.
Gwi-han wasn't playing.
He had never been playing.
All the times he had stopped on the eighth move, Si-hyeon had been fighting a man with the brakes on.
The second strike, Si-hyeon dodged.
The third nearly took his head off.
He rolled under the fourth and came up slashing.
Gwi-han turned it and hit him across the ribs, and the breath left Si-hyeon's body in a rush.
