Chapter 21: The Night Before
She missed his head by an inch.
The vase hit the wall behind him and burst.
Water and yellow roses came down all over his linen shirt and his good shoes.
Dex stood there dripping, with a rose stuck to his shoulder.
"You crazy old bitch," he said.
It was the first true thing I'd heard him say in two months.
A nurse came through the door at a run.
She looked at the glass on the floor, at the wet man, at the seventy-year-old in a straw hat with a tube in her arm and her hand still up.
"Sir," the nurse said to Dex. "You need to leave."
"She threw a vase at me."
"Then you definitely need to leave."
Winona tore the check in half, then in quarters, and dropped the pieces in her pudding.
"Tell him Kessel said the same thing Saturday that he said in August," she said to me, loud enough for the hall. "Word for word. I'll be there to say it."
Dex left a trail of wet footprints all the way to the elevator.
"I've wanted to do that to a man for twenty years," the nurse said, and went out.
