Chapter 14: Twenty-Five

On Thursday morning Sabina signed the diner's lease with a ballpoint pen from my apron.

We were in Mr. Pascoe's study on Asylum Avenue.

The oxygen machine hummed, and the nurse pretended not to read over her shoulder.

The lease was in my boss's name.

It gave my boss the ground floor and the rooms above for ten years.

The rent was what she had paid since before I could walk.

Mr. Pascoe had dated it the twentieth, to take effect the minute the building stopped being Garner's.

"It might not hold," he said from the pillow. "Sign it anyway."

Sabina signed it with her tongue between her teeth.

"Happy birthday to me," she said. "I'm giving away a building I don't own yet."

"Technically," Conor said, "you're giving away a building you will own in fifteen hours."

"That's the nicest thing a lawyer's ever said to me."

"Don't tell my father."

"I heard that," said Mr. Pascoe.

At four o'clock the courier came into the diner.

He was a young man in a black jacket.

He stood just inside the door with a long envelope held in both hands.
