Chapter 17: The Cheque
Donald sent for me on Saturday morning, and he sent the butler, not the driver, which meant it was private.
I found him in the study on the second floor, in the leather chair where he had fallen.
The rug had been replaced.
Somebody had put a vase of Sabina's yellow chrysanthemums on the desk.
He wore the dark cardigan and a plaid blanket on his knees.
He looked ten years older than he had at the studio.
"Close the door, please," he said. "I have something to do before I lose my nerve."
I closed it.
"Sit. Not there. That's Garner's chair. Take the other."
I took the other.
He folded his hands on the blanket, and I saw how they shook.
"I owe you an apology," he said. "Constance says I'm not to make it a long one."
"You don't owe me one, Mr. Harrowgate," I said.
"I do. For sixteen days you slept in a room with a window seat, because Constance wanted you to have a window."
"I liked the window."
"You were fitted for dresses and photographed," he said. "You were told what to say by a woman my brother hired."
His mouth twisted.
"A stylist, Rhea. You carried plates for a living, and we dressed you like a doll."
