Chapter 24: The Place Set for Me
On Christmas morning I made breakfast for a dozen people in my father's cast-iron pan.
The Harrowgate kitchen had a range with eight burners and a cook who had worked there for nineteen years.
She stood against the wall with her arms folded and watched me crack the first egg.
"It's a very old pan," she said.
"It was my father's."
"It's seasoned wrong."
"It's seasoned exactly right," I said. "It's seasoned for him."
She looked at the pan for a moment.
Then she handed me the spatula she'd been keeping behind her back, a good one, with a wooden handle.
"Use this," she said. "That edge will scratch."
I used it.
I cooked three dozen eggs over easy, and bacon, and a stack of toast, and I carried the platters out to the dining room myself.
It wasn't the long table this time.
Constance had had the small one brought in from the sunroom and set by the window, where the snow was coming down on the lawn.
