Chapter 24: Both Leashes
On the third Saturday in December I woke at half past eight to the sound of nobody needing anything.
The light through the blinds was white and flat.
Waffles lay across my feet.
Tank lay across Waffles.
And Beau lay on his side with his head propped on his hand and the quilt pulled to his hip, watching me wake up, as he had on the first morning he stayed.
"It's eight thirty," he said.
"I know."
"Your rule was eight."
"I took the rule away," I said, "and you stayed anyway."
"I'd have stayed if you'd kept it."
"I know that too."
He reached over and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.
It was a small thing.
My eyes stung, because a year ago I would have given anything for a man to do it.
"What do you want to do today?" he said.
"Nothing."
"All of it?"
"Nothing," I said. "Stay in the bed. Don't go anywhere. Don't make me choose a single thing."
"Okay."
"And I want you to take me however you want."
His hand stopped on my cheek.
"I've got no orders," I said. "No rules. I'm not setting the pace. I'm giving it to you. What do you want?"
He looked at me for a long moment.
"I want to watch your face," he said.
"That's all?"
"That's everything."
I pushed the quilt off both of us, and he laid me on my back in the white light, and kissed me.
He started at my mouth and went slowly down.
He kissed my throat, and the freckles, and the soft place under my ribs that he'd praised in September.
