Chapter 16: On the Club Steps

Giulia's POV

At noon the street in front of the Calumet club was blocked at both ends.

Five Dons stood in a loose half circle on the pavement with their wives, and behind them stood a hundred men in good coats.

Nobody had told me whether to come early or late, so I came on time.

Declan walked at my left shoulder as far as the bottom stair, and there he stopped.

He put his hands in his coat pockets and looked straight ahead.

He did not say a word.

Renato stood at the top of the steps in the dark suit he had worn to our wedding.

His mother was not beside him.

When he saw me he came down three stairs, slowly, so that the whole street could watch him do it.

"Thank you for coming, Giulia."

"You asked in front of the families," I said. "I wasn't going to make them wait."

He took a folded paper from his breast pocket.

I knew it before he opened it.

It was my signature, with the long tail on the G.

He tore it in half, and then in half again, and let the pieces fall down the stairs.

Then he went down on one knee on the cold stone, and the street made a sound.

I had never seen him kneel to anyone, not even at his father's coffin.

"I made a mistake," Renato said. His voice carried to the end of the block. "I was proud, and I listened to the wrong people, and I did a thing in front of my own men that no husband should do."
