Kirill saw him a second after I did.
His hand went still on my back.
"Do you want him gone?"
I watched Vin under the bare tree.
He didn't wave.

"Leave him."
"He's watching you."
"He can watch," I said. "It's all he gets."
I turned my back on the window.
Behind me, Nadia was standing on the bench at the long table.

Benno was conducting with a cannoli.
I walked back to them.
I didn't look at the window again.
Nadia told me later he stood there until the streetlights came on.

Nobody had to.
