Chapter 4: The Robe

I didn't sleep.

At nine I came downstairs in Nadia's sweatpants and my bloody coat and told Kirill I needed my things.

He was at the long table with coffee and a ledger.

"Make a list. I'll send men."

"I'm not sending strangers into my mother's jewelry box."

"Then I'll drive you."

"Into Cammarata's house? Alone?"

"I won't go in." He closed the ledger. "I'll sit at the curb with the engine running and the window down. If you're not out in twenty minutes, I come in."

"And then what?"

"Then I'm in."

He said it the way other men say it might rain.

The square in South Philly was bright and cold and full of church bells.

Kirill parked his black car right in front of the house, across from two of Vin's soldiers on the stoop.

They saw who was driving and both reached for their phones.

"Twenty minutes," Kirill said.

"Fifteen."

I let myself in with my own key.

It still worked.

That made me angrier than I expected.

The house smelled like espresso and the lilies Vin's mother put in every room.

Voices came from the dining room.

Vin's mother sat at the head of the table in her pearls, buttering toast.

Beside her, in my chair, sat Romina.

She was wearing my robe.

My father's ivory silk, belted at her little waist, the sleeves rolled because they were too long for her.

The housekeeper was pouring her juice.

All three of them looked up at me.

The housekeeper set the pitcher down very slowly.

"Simona," Vin's mother said. "You look terrible. Sit down, I'll have her make you eggs. Vincenzo's out, he'll be glad you came to your senses."
