Chapter 10: The Driver
Teo's lawyer sent the photo over by courier, and I spread it on the desk in Teo's study under the green lamp.
Teo stood at the window with his back to me.
"It's a long lens," he said. "Anyone could have taken it from the trees."
"There aren't any trees on that side. I planted the boxwoods myself. Come here and look."
He came.
"Look at the angle. It's low and from the left. You can see under the porch rail." I put my finger on the corner of the picture. "And that's the lane gravel, in the bottom edge."
"So he stood on the lane."
"Nobody stood on the lane. I was looking out that door. There was one thing on the lane that night." I looked up at him. "Your car."
He didn't say anything.
"Your guard was in the yard. You came up the path. Who was in the car?"
"My driver."
"The same driver who held the door open for you at the vault," I said. "To a car with a bomb under it."
He went very quiet.
"He's driven for my family for twenty years," he said. "He drove me to my mother's funeral. He drove Agata to her prom."
"Then he knew her," I said. "How did your uncle know about the locket the next morning? You said your men talk. Which man?"
Teo looked at the photo for a long time.
Then he picked up the desk phone and said one sentence.
"Send him up."
I started to leave.
"Stay," Teo said. "You found it. You stay."
The driver came in five minutes later with his cap in his hands.
He was gray at the temples, with a soft face and big careful hands.
He saw me at the desk, and the photo, and stopped in the doorway.
