Chapter 4: The Orchard Wall

Giulia was sitting against the orchard wall with her shoes in her hand when the guard found her.

It was ten past four in the morning.

She had walked from the Bronx to Riverdale in the dark, eleven miles, and her feet were bleeding through her stockings.

I ran down the hill in my bare feet and went to my knees in the wet grass.

"Sera," she said. She was crying and laughing at once. "Your Don said both of us would be safe. I heard him say it. So I came."

"He's not my Don," I said, and held her.

Tadeo stood a few steps back with a coat over his arm.

He didn't come closer.

He gave the coat to me, and I put it around her, and the sleeves hung to her knees.

"Ines," he said to someone behind him. "The doctor's room. Now."

The doctor was his sister.

She came out of the house in a white coat over pajamas, with a black braid down her back, and looked at Giulia's feet and then at me.

"I'm Ines," she said. "I'm the Quintero who isn't going to shoot you. Can you stand, sweetheart?"

"I think so," said Giulia.

"You can't, but it's a nice try." Ines scooped one arm under her. "Don't look so frightened, Serafina. I'm very good with feet."

Giulia and I both stared at her.

"I didn't say a word," I said.

"You didn't have to. She's holding her stomach like it's made of glass." Ines shrugged. "I'm a doctor. Also, my brother told me at midnight. He said to expect a pregnant woman at the gate before dawn."

I turned to Tadeo.

"You told her at midnight?"

"I guessed it at the dinner," he said. "When your father hit her."
