"Say hello to your mother, buddy," Dirk said.
Fabric rustled, glass clinked, and then my son's voice came out of the phone.
"Mama, I'm at a party."
"I know, baby. Are you hurt?"
"No. A man with a pink face keeps giving me cookies."
The first full breath I'd taken in a day went out of me.
"Stay on the chair, Angelo."
"I'm on Dirk's knee," he said, with great disapproval.
"He smells like soap."
Dirk took the phone back, and his voice was pleased with itself.
"Here is how tonight goes."
"A woman found a lost little boy on Salina Street and brought him to the one man in this county who would know what to do."
"At one o'clock I hand him back to his mother, in my ballroom, in front of two hundred donors and a camera."
"Then I ask the whole county whose wife she is."
"You want Dominic in handcuffs," I said.
"I want him to walk through my front door for his son."
"The sheriff is the chairman's guest tonight."
"Alone, Pamela. The front door. You have an hour."
The line went dead.
Aldo had not moved from the folding chair, and his friendly smile had come back, thinner than before.
