Chapter 21: The Judgment
Elena's POV
The back room of the closed restaurant in Newark was colder than I remembered.
The round table stood in the middle of it, dark with age.
Five old men sat at it.
The oldest had his cane across his knees.
Raf stood behind my chair with his arm in a sling and a bandage showing under his cuff.
Teresa sat at my left with a rosary wound around her fingers and a bruise on her cheek.
She had refused to stay home.
"I want to see his face," she had said.
Two men brought Sandro in.
His wrist was wrapped, and his coat was gone, and someone had stitched his side in the car.
He still walked in with his head up.
He did not look at me.
"Alessandro Pagano," said the old man. "You are brought before the Commission by the Don of the Montanos, by the consigliere's daughter, and by your own captains. Do you know the charges?"
"I know a woman has been telling stories."
"Then hear them."
The old man nodded to a soldier, who set a recorder on the table.
It was the wire Elena had worn in the penthouse, played back from Raf's receiver.
I watched Sandro's face while his own voice came out of it.
A motorcycle at the Halsted light.
A cousin on the back.
The docks, and the church lot at Joliet.
A twenty-four-year-old boy, alone, in a good suit.
No man at the table looked away.
When it ended, the old man said, "Is that your voice?"
"It is a trick."
"Is it your voice?"
Sandro stood very straight.
"It is a wire taken from a wife in distress, by a man who wanted my port."
"I have the ledger," Raf said.
He did not raise his voice.
