Chapter 24: Paolo Pietro
The first pain came at the dinner table, on the last Sunday in August.
I put down my fork.
Teresa looked up from the sauce.
"No," she said.
"It's not time yet. The doctor said the first week of September."
"Babies do not read calendars. Raffaele."
Raf was on his feet before she finished his name.
The second pain came in the front hall, and I grabbed the banister.
It bent me over.
"Car," Teresa said. "Now. I will bring the bag."
"I'll drive," Raf said.
"You will drive like a Montano, with a gun on the seat. I will sit in the back."
"I do not have a gun."
"Then you will drive like a man with one."
The hospital was forty minutes away.
We made it in nineteen.
I remember the highway lights going past in long gold streaks, and Raf's hand clamped on mine across the seat.
He had not let go once.
He ran two red lights.
The third pain was the worst.
"Raf," I said, and gripped his arm hard enough to leave marks.
"I'm here."
"I can't."
"You can."
"I can't. It's too early."
"You are Pietro Rinaldi's daughter," Raf said. "You walked into a closed restaurant in Newark and stared down five Dons with your hands on a table. You can do this."
"It hurts more."
"I know."
"You don't know."
"No," he said. "I don't."
I laughed in the middle of the contraction, and it turned into a cry.
Teresa leaned between the seats and slapped his shoulder.
"Faster."
The nurses were waiting at the emergency doors.
Raf had phoned ahead from the car, in the voice he used for the Commission, and I saw two of them flinch before he even spoke.
They put me in a chair.
