Chapter 14: The Vault
Ezio didn't answer me.
He dipped his brush and painted the tablet beside his father's, top to bottom, slow and even.
He kept painting until noon.
He smiled at his uncle when Gaspare left.
He even waved.
In the car, with the twins asleep against each other in the back, he finally spoke.
"Tonight."
"We call the agent," I said. "She gets a warrant."
"A warrant takes two days. Gaspare has a cousin in the clerk's office and two cops who eat free on Decatur Street. He hears about it by lunch, and the gun goes in the river by dinner."
"So we just break into a cemetery."
"We just visit my father."
Fia, in the front seat, turned around.
"I'm coming."
"No," Ezio said.
"You need a lookout who isn't a Severino. And you need somebody to drive who can say she was never there." She folded her arms. "My brother's four doors down. I'm coming."
I made one rule.
"I film all of it. From the gate to the gun. Every second on my phone."
Ezio looked at me in the mirror.
"Why?"
"Because the last time I saw that gun, I was the only witness. I'm not doing that again."
At eleven-thirty the twins were asleep in the Garden District with his mother in the chair between their beds.
She had a rosary in one hand and a kitchen knife on the nightstand.
"Go," she said. "Bring him back to me."
The cemetery gates were chained.
The side gate on Conti Street wasn't.
The caretaker had taken an envelope from Ezio at six and left it on the latch.
Fia parked the hatchback across the street with the lights off.
