Chapter 28: The Nephew

Ezio walked to the stand without looking at me.

He passed the defense table close enough for Gaspare to touch his sleeve.

Gaspare didn't.

Ezio put his hand on the Bible and swore, in a plum suit, with the tattoos climbing out of his collar in front of the jury.

Then he sat.

Gaspare's lawyer took his time.

He let the jury look at the Don of New Orleans in the witness chair.

"Mr. Severino. The pistol found in your family's tomb. Whose is it?"

"Mine. A Beretta. Registered to me."

"Where was it on the night your father was shot?"

Every lawyer in the room leaned forward an inch.

Ezio's own lawyer half rose from his seat in the gallery.

Ezio didn't look at him.

"In the glovebox of my car," he said. "On P3. I put it there myself before I went up to the bar."

The lawyer blinked.

"You understand you have the right not to answer."

"I understand. I'm answering."

"Why didn't you report it missing?"

"Because I was twenty-eight and stupid. I thought my own gun would hang me for my own father." Ezio's voice stayed level. "So I kept my mouth shut for eight years. That was my mistake. Not my uncle's. Mine."
