Chapter 8: The Barone Table

Ezio was halfway to the car before I caught his arm.

"Where are you going?"

"Decatur Street."

"To do what?"

He looked down at my hand on his sleeve.

"Ezio. To do what?"

"To ask my uncle where my gun is."

"And when he smiles and says, 'What gun?'"

His jaw locked.

"Then I ask him differently."

"Then you kill him in his own restaurant," I said, "and the gun stays wherever it is. Eight years of nothing. And the next man he paid comes for my kids at school."

"Our kids."

"Our kids." I didn't let go. "You kill him, I'm a witness to that too. And I'll say so. I mean it."

He stared at me.

Behind him, the man with the cane spoke for the first time.

"She's right, Ezio. Your father would say the same."

"My father is dead."

"So find his gun," the old man said, "and bury his brother properly. With a judge."

Ezio stood there a long time.

Then he took his hand off the car door.

"So I smile at him," he said. "At Mass. At dinner."

"Like you did for eight years."

"I didn't know for eight years."

"Then it'll be harder," I said. "Do it anyway."

That was Tuesday.

By Sunday Fia had a plan of her own.

"Every Sunday after Mass the whole family eats at the bakery," she said on the phone. "My father, my uncles, my aunts, thirty cousins. They all think you're the Barone bait Gaspare said you were. They're the people he made into murderers. Come tell them they weren't."

"Your father hates me."

"My father hates everybody. Bring the kids. Nobody shoots in front of kids at Sunday lunch."

So on Sunday at one o'clock I walked into the Barone bakery on Magazine Street with a twin in each hand.
