Chapter 23: The Man in the Cooler

I looked at the photograph until the snow in it stopped moving.

Then I looked up at Ruggero.

"Ask your husband," he said, "what his family was doing on Taylor Street that night."

He buttoned his gray coat.

He walked to his car through the middle of my block, and for once nobody stepped aside for him.

He had to walk around the butcher.

The car pulled away.

The excavator was still idling.

I turned around and held the picture up in front of Teo's face.

The whole street was watching.

"That's my father," he said.

"I know who it is. Did you know?"

"No."

He said it once, flat, the way he'd said "she's my wife" at the Morra table.

I looked at his face for a long time.

There was nothing in it but the photograph.

"I believe your face," I said. "I don't believe a face anymore. Bring me the truth, Teo. On paper."

He took a step back from me.

Then he got in his car and drove away, and his men stayed on my sidewalk.

The florist came down the line in her bathrobe and looked over my shoulder at the picture.
