Chapter 7: Married Twice for a Chair
Nobody in the shop moved.
Carlotta recovered first.
She pulled her glove back on, finger by finger, smiling.
"She's told everyone on this street some sad little story, baby. Now she's telling you. Ask her for proof." She kissed the air near his cheek on her way past. "See you Saturday. Wear the gray tie."
Her friends followed her out.
The bell rang behind them.
He was still looking at me.
"Kitchen," I said.
Benedetta took the stroller handles without being asked.
"Go. I've got the gremlins. Everybody else, cannoli are two for one, nobody saw anything."
Trays of bread cooled on the racks. The old oven ticked in the corner, the one my father built the shop around.
Teo shut the door and leaned on it.
"Say it," he said.
So I said it.
My mother was Ludovica Morra's only daughter.
She ran from that house at nineteen and married a baker and never went home.
She made me memorize a number and swear never to say the name.
I told it plainly, standing by the bread racks, the whole of it, start to finish.
My arms were crossed over my chest because my milk was coming in again, and I was furious about it.
He listened without interrupting once.
When I finished, his hand had closed into a fist so tight the scar on his knuckles went white.
"Two years," he said. "You never told me."
"You never asked. I said robbery, you said I'm sorry, and you changed the subject. You didn't want to know about my family because then I'd want to know about yours."
"There's more," I said.
I told him about the nursery glass.
The white roses.
The deadline he'd given me, and what he'd promised if I missed it.
Teo straightened up off the door.
