Chapter 15: Rebuild

Nobody in the study said anything for a long time.

Nick had come in behind us. I hadn't heard him.

He stood in the doorway in a clean T-shirt with his arm in its white gauze, reading the screen over Antonia's head.

"She'll be in the river first," he said.

His voice had nothing in it at all.

"She knew he'd send you. Before he did. She set it up so you'd be dead and he'd be dead the same night."

"And she'd be the grieving one," I said. "With a sonogram."

Antonia straightened up.

She put her hand on the back of Massimo's chair.

"In my husband's time," she said, "a message like this, a girl like this, a man like that. It would be finished by Sunday."

"I know."

"Nicky would do it. Wouldn't you, Nicky?"

Nick didn't answer.

He looked at me.

"No," I said.

Antonia's eyes came around to me, sharp.

"No?"

"If Paolo disappears, his father burns the Hill to find out who did it. And the widows get thirty new friends." I closed the laptop. "And Marisa gets to be a sad story. I don't want her to be a sad story."

"What do you want her to be?"

"Seen."

Antonia looked at me for a long moment.

"By who?"

"By everybody who ever believed her." I picked up the laptop and held it against my chest. "Not yet. When he can't buy his way out of the room."

"And until then?"

"Until then it goes back in the safe. Nobody in this house says a word about it."
