Chapter 23: Seven Pounds

Nobody panicked except Nick.

The florist sat me down in her chair.

The butcher's widow sent her grandson running for towels.

The gnocchi man stood up and put his napkin down.

"Women and Infants," he said. "Ten minutes if you take Point Street."

It was his longest sentence yet.

Nick was already gone.

He'd run to get the car and forgotten the car was parked behind the police barricade at the bottom of Atwells.

I watched him run down the middle of the street between the long tables, past every kitchen on the Hill, in his good shirt.

"He's going to have to come back," the florist said.

"I know."

"Should we tell him?"

"Let him run," said Antonia.

She'd come down the table and was standing over me with her purse already on her arm.

She put her hand on my forehead.

"Does it hurt?"

"Not yet."

"It will," she said. "Good. That means it's working."

Nick came back four minutes later in the pizza guy's van, because the pizza guy had thrown him the keys.

It smelled like oregano the whole way to the hospital.

The pains started on Point Street.

By the bridge, I was holding the handle over the door so hard my fingers went white.
