Chapter 20: The Easiest Part
Renzo made a sound beside me.
It wasn't a word.
It was the sound a man makes when he puts his weight on a step that isn't there.
The consigliere stood up from his folding chair.
The captains came to the window.
Nobody said "I told you so."
Nobody had to.
Down on the pier, the Philadelphia men got the seal off and swung the container doors open.
One of them shone a flashlight inside.
He stood there a moment.
Then he reached in and pulled out a box and tore the cardboard open.
He held up a square of glazed blue tile in the work light.
"It's tile," he called, in that flat Philly voice. "It's freaking tile."
The Philadelphia son turned to Cordelia.
Cordelia stared at the tile.
Then, slowly, she looked up at my trailer.
Renzo opened the door before I could stop him.
He went down the metal steps and out onto the gravel, into the work light, with his hands empty at his sides.
