Chapter 22: Thirty-Four Weeks
"Nine days," I said.
"Nine days." The consigliere put on his hat. "Philadelphia thinks we have her. We think Philadelphia has her. And I think a woman like that doesn't let anybody have her."
He touched the brim to me and went out after Renzo.
Gianni came and stood beside my chair.
"You want me to find her?"
"No," I said. "I want you to carry boxes."
The Sabatini books came to the bakery that afternoon in eleven banker's boxes, in the back of the consigliere's car.
My mother looked at them stacked in her kitchen and crossed herself.
"In my house," she said.
"Two weeks, Ma."
"In my house, with the baby coming."
But she cleared the table for them, and she put out the good lamp.
At ten o'clock that night she brought me a cup of chamomile.
Then she sat beside me in her reading glasses, sorting receipts into piles by color, because I asked her to.
I worked the way my father taught me.
One box at a time.
One question at a time.
Where did the money come in, and where did it go?
By the third day I found the first hole.
