Chapter 7: The Roof
Valerian had the window open before the third whistle ended.
He swung Ysolene through it in one arm and onto the slates of the east wing's roof.
A second later he came after her and eased the casement shut.
Below them, in the room they had left, a door opened.
Candlelight spilled across the carpet.
She flattened herself against the cold chimney stack with her husband's body pressed over hers.
She heard soft footsteps cross the floor and stop.
They stopped at the desk.
"Odd," said Ignatius's voice, muffled through the glass. "It smells of..."
A long silence.
Then a drawer opened, a ribbon was untied, and papers rustled.
Ysolene stopped breathing.
"Forty-two," said Ignatius to himself, and she heard the bundle thump back into place. "Good."
The drawer shut.
His steps went away.
She leaned her head against Valerian's chest, weak with relief, and found she was laughing silently into his shirt.
He was laughing too, shoulders shaking.
"Forty-two," she whispered.
"He counts them."
"There were forty-three. I took one."
"And he never noticed. He has lost track of his own pile, and I counted the pages while you weren't looking."
