Chapter 15: The Third Bride
Nobody on that shore made a sound.
Ayame stood in the middle of the pebbles with her hands at her sides, and she did not look at Danjuro again.
She looked at the chained god.
"Thirty years ago," she said, "I was eighteen, and they drew my straw."
"My father was a tenant on the east terrace."
"They tied the white sash on me at the jetty, and my mother wasn't allowed to stand near."
"And I went into that lake, and I was so frightened I couldn't scream."
She drew a breath.
"I woke on a stone floor."
"He was kneeling in front of me."
"He had his hands up, like this, as if I were a deer. He said, 'I did not ask for you. I am so sorry. Tell me where you wish to go.'"
A sound went through the crowd, a low, ragged one.
"I said, 'Home,'" Ayame said. "And he said, 'They will kill you if you go home.' And I said, 'Then anywhere.'"
Shizuku looked at Ryugen.
He was looking at the stones.
"Three days," Ayame said. "He kept me three days, and fed me, and asked nothing. Then he carried me over the mountain at night on his back, and set me down in the next valley with a purse of gold and a new name. I married a rice broker. I have four children. I have a granddaughter who laughs just like my mother."
She turned to face the crowd.
"I never told a soul, because he asked me not to. A bride who walks out of that lake is called a demon's whore. He knew what you would do. You have just shown me he was right."
