Chapter 17: The Gate
Shizuku ran the whole way in her father's boots.
The Old Gate stood at the lake's southern end, where the rock of the valley wall had been cut by hand three hundred years ago.
A stone chute as wide as a barn door led out of the lake there.
It ran down a long stepped channel to the canal that fed every rice field in the valley.
Normally the chute was shut by a wooden gate as thick as a tree trunk, and the headman held the only key.
The gate was open.
She came over the last rise with Chiyo panting at her elbow and half the village strung out behind them, and she stopped dead.
The lake was running out.
It poured through the chute in a brown roaring sheet, white at the lip, and went thundering down the channel in a flood.
Along the shore, the water had pulled back sixty paces already.
Boats lay on their sides in the mud.
Fish flapped in the shallows, silver and desperate, and the reeds stood naked in black slime that smelled of rot.
On the stone platform above the winch, six men in work coats stood with their staves.
