Chapter 19: The Fleet Burns
Four nights later the river horns woke the whole city.
Ysmera was on the roof before the second blast had finished.
Below the cliff, the Karnath river ran black under a new moon.
Thirty ships were coming up it under oars, with their lamps shuttered, and their decks bristled with ballistae and fire-pots.
She knew the flagship by its blue sail.
The Lord of the River Fleet stood at its prow.
Aldous had spent seven years buying council votes.
Last spring they had let his brother out of the cells for the good of the river towns.
Now the fleet had come to hold the capital until the Standing, and to hold the queen with it.
Torvald landed beside her in the dark, already armored.
"Eleven riders are saddled," he said. "Say when."
"Burn the sails, not the men."
"If they fire on the roost yard?"
"Then burn the men."
He kissed her once, hard, through the visor.
Then the roof gate crashed open.
