Chapter 23: Fire
Elowen walked into the fire.
The ring of white flame closed behind her, and the heat rolled out over the terraces so that ten thousand people shielded their faces.
She did not hurry.
She did not slow.
Her white gown shivered in the updraft, and the end of her braid lifted off her shoulder and glowed.
Ysmera stood with her fingernails cutting into her palms.
The Crown Dragon turned its great head to follow the girl.
It lowered itself on its forelegs until its gold eye was level with her face.
She stopped a pace from its jaws.
For a long, long moment the two of them looked at each other.
Elowen lifted her right hand, with the palm open, the way she had once held a candle.
The flame climbed her arm in a ribbon of gold.
It ran over her shoulder and down her braid and wrapped her whole body in light.
Her hair streamed out red and gold in the blaze.
Her gown did not burn.
Her skin did not blister.
