Chapter 20: The Bottle
Morag came to the door behind us in her dressing gown.
She saw the photograph and went grey.
"Give me that," she said.
Struan didn't move.
"Gran. Did she drink?"
"No."
"Whisky. Did she drink whisky?"
"Not a drop in her life. She couldn't abide the smell." Morag took the card out of his fingers and read it, and her mouth went thin. "He doesn't mean whisky."
"I know what he means."
"He means you to think it. That's all this is. He never once sat at my table. He doesn't know what she drank."
"She was never sick a day," Struan said. "You told me that. Then a fever, in one week."
"Struan."
"He knew. All these years he knew what she was. He knew what I was."
He untied the photograph from the bottle, very carefully, and put it inside his shirt.
Then he walked off down the burn path in his bare feet, and didn't come back.
He left the bottle on the step.
I picked it up.
I should have poured it out right there. I've thought about that every day since.
