Chapter 4: The Frostbrand
On the fifth day Lysandra walked into the east wing without knocking.
Greta followed her with a basket of sewing, which was the excuse, and a face that said she'd rather be elsewhere.
The Saintess's parlor had been Alaric's mother's sitting room once.
Now it smelled of lilies and warm wax, and a white cloth lay over the settee.
The book had this scene on page forty.
Every afternoon at three, Anneliese healed the Duke's scar, and every afternoon the Duchess would burst in, find his shirt off and her hands on his chest, and scream until the house shook.
Lysandra had decided to be late for the screaming.
She opened the inner door.
"Please don't mind me," she said.
Alaric sat on the white settee, stripped to the waist, with his hands on his knees.
Anneliese stood in front of him in a pale blue gown, her sleeves pushed up to her elbows and both palms spread an inch off his left side.
They both looked at the door.
Lysandra looked at the scar.
It started under his left arm and ran down his ribs to the waistband of his trousers, a ragged black line as wide as two fingers.
Dark veins spread out from it under the skin, thin and branching.
It looked cold, even in that warm room, and it looked like it hurt.
"The frostbrand," Anneliese said gently. "A sorcerer's blade from the border. It's stubborn. I've worked on it for a week."
"I'll sit," Lysandra said.
She took the chair against the wall, folded her hands and nodded to Greta, who sat down on a stool by the door with her sewing and her mouth tight shut.
