Chapter 20: Board Meeting
I held on to the edge of the paint counter.
"Can you prove that?"
"I can prove it to a judge," he said. "It's in the warrant affidavit we filed Friday."
"Is that private?"
"It's on the court's website." He drank his coffee. "Anybody can read it."
"Out loud?"
He looked at me over the cup for a long second.
"It's a public record, Mrs. Whitford. I can't tell you what to do with a public record."
He bought a second coffee on his way out.
He put another five in the jar.
On Monday morning, I wired nine thousand dollars to the science center in Cincinnati.
The deposit was paid, four days early.
Twenty-four kids were going to see the dome.
On Monday night, I went to the board meeting.
The board met in a long room at the administration building.
It was the same low brick box where the investigator had put a box of tissues in front of my chair.
There were five seats at the board table.
The president's seat in the middle was empty, with her nameplate turned face down.
