Chapter 31: The Midwife School

I broke the gold wax sitting up in the furs, with Ilvar reading over my shoulder.

"To the Princess Linnet, Queen of the Wood," it said. "The council has opened the Academy to every student of every blood, from this autumn. As the new Master of Light, I write to ask a favor."

"Who is it?" I said.

"The old Master of Records," said Ilvar. "He's a hundred and four. He's lovely. He falls asleep in council."

I read on.

"Our healers could not find a living child the night you found one. I would like you to come and teach them to listen. One class a week, at your convenience. Name your fee."

I put the letter down on the furs.

"Well?" said Ilvar.

"One class a week," I said. "For healers who already think they know everything."

"That's a no."

"That's a no to that." I picked it up again and looked at it. "I want a school."

He waited.

"A midwife school. A real one. Half-elves and star elves on the same benches. Rushford girls and court girls. Anybody who wants to catch babies and is willing to be shouted at by Mam."

"Where?"

I thought about it.

"The old glasshouse," I said. "Behind the library. Nobody else wants it."

"It's full of orange trees now."

"Then the students can eat oranges. Women in labor love an orange."

He took the letter out of my hand, folded it, and kissed me.
