Chapter 16: The Bronze Mirror

The bronze mirror stood on a lacquered stand, as tall as Murong Yue herself, and in it she was entirely naked.

Qinglan had turned the stand to face the low velvet bench in the dressing room.

She sat on the bench, her back against the cushion, and she had Yue seated in front of her, between her knees, with the long black hair swept over one shoulder.

The Dowager's legs were spread wide on either side of Qinglan's.

In the mirror, everything showed.

"Look," said Qinglan.

Yue looked away at once.

"I said look."

"I do not want to see it."

"See what?"

"A woman that old, with her thighs open."

"You're thirty-four. I've seen the woman in the mirror, and I'd like to introduce you."

Qinglan put her chin on Yue's shoulder and met her eyes in the glass.

Her hands lay low on the Dowager's belly, and they were tanned and ink-stained against pale skin.

"Look at your breasts."

Yue looked.

They were heavy and full, the nipples dark and hard.

"Now watch me touch them."

Qinglan slid her palms up and cupped both, lifting their weight, and thumbed the nipples until they stood out stiff and wet-looking in the lamplight.

The Dowager's lips parted.

"Tell me what you see."

"Your hands."

"What else?"

"My face."

"What's it doing?"

"It is." Yue swallowed. "It is soft. I did not know it looked like that."

"Like what?"

"Like someone who is wanted."

Qinglan's throat tightened.

She kissed the side of her neck and pinched both nipples, and the woman in the mirror gasped.

"Keep watching."

One hand slid down.

It traced the soft curve of the belly, the crease of the hip, and parted the black curls.

Qinglan opened the lips with two fingers, and the pink glossy flesh showed bare in the glass.

"Oh," said Yue. "Oh, that is. That is me."

"That's you."

"I am so wet."

"I know. Look how wet."

She dragged her fingertips through it, up to the clit and back down, and held them up so the lamplight caught the shine, a thin string stretched between her thumb and finger.
